This is unusual, as it is not a post related to the topic of this blog. For any apple users who also use Open Office, a recent upgrade in Sierra macOSSierra version 10.12 removed a security system preference that allows apps from non-apple sources to be opened. Because this preference was removed, any users of Apache Open Office, a free word processor available on-line, may not be able to open their documents. As I ran into a few people having this problem, I thought I would post what worked in my case.
There is an easy fix that worked in my case. GO TO SYSTEM PREFERENCES OPEN 'SECURITY & PRIVACY' AS SHOWN BELOW: THE FOLLOWING WIDOW WILL OPEN (SEE BELOW SECOND SCREEN SHOT) NOTICE THAT THE ONLY OPTION IS 'ALLOW APPS DOWNLOAD' ONLY INCLUDE FROM APP STORE AND IDENTIFIABLE DEVELOPERS' Previously, this box included the option to open from other non-app store developers as an 'always, sometimes, never.' This option no longer appears on the window. In my case, any attempt to open my OpenOffice documents resulted in an error message that my security features did not allow me to open my documents. So, here is the fix..... OPEN AN OPEN OFFICE DOCUMENT GO TO YOUR SYSTEM PREFERENCES -> SECURITY & PRIVACY SETTINGS IF YOU ARE STILL GETTING AN ERROR MESSAGE SOMETHING LIKE 'CANNOT OPEN DOCUMENT BECAUSE APP SECURITY SETTINGS IS NOT FROM A IDENTIFIABLE DEVELOPER' A POP-UP SHOULD COME UP WITH A MESSAGE 'DO YOU STILL WANT TO OPEN?' BELOW AT THE SECURITY WINDOW. IT IS THEN POSSIBLE TO CLICK ON THE LOCK, ENTER YOUR PASSWORD, AND SELECT 'OPEN ANYWAY'. AGAIN, THE OPTION SHOULD APPEAR AS A POP-UP. This used to be a visible option, now it is not, but it should pop up and allow you to open the application. Again, this is only for Open Office, the security feature is there to prevent opening apps that are not recognized by apple store as a security feature, so please be sure that you understand what application you are opening. Hope this helps anyone having the same problem I did. Open Office is a free and open productivity suite that is available for download.
